A pap smear test is a simple bedside procedure that can be performed by your doctor, primarily to test for abnormal changes in cells, such as cancer. The procedure involves introducing an instrument known as a speculum carefully into the vagina. The doctor will obtain a tissue sample from the cervix with a brush for further testing.

The purpose of pap smear screening is to detect precancerous changes in the cervix. When you get a pap smear, the sample of cells will then be sent to the lab to be reviewed under a microscope for early abnormal changes, especially cancer. How Often Do I Need A Pap Smear?

In Singapore, the Ministry of Health (MOH) & Health Promotion Board (HPB) recommend women who are sexually active to have routine pap smears from the age of 25 years onwards.

Women should get a pap smear every 3 years until the age of 65, provided the findings have been normal. However, one may be advised for more frequent pap smears, even up to 3-6 months in between pap smears for specific individuals.
