Common STD

Chlamydia

Most times, a person might not realise that he/she has contracted Chlamydia as might not notice symptoms or are simply asymptomatic. Some patients may have a burning, itching sensation when passing urine. Clear discharge may also be noticed from the genitals.

In cases where Chlamydia affect the anal/rectal region, the patient may experience bowel movements with pain, or even the feeling of having to go again shortly after passing motion.

Should such symptoms be identified, it is advised to go for an STD test.

Syphilis

Symptoms of a syphilis infection differs from stage to stage of the disease. In the earliest stage (10 days to 3 months after exposure), the first sign a patient may notice is a single ulcer or sore on the point the bacteria entered the body. This sore is painless, and can be hidden inside spaces that cannot be seen easily, such as inside the vagina or rectum. This will heal on its own, but does not mean the disease has been cured. This will mean that it is about to progress to the next stage in the syphilis infection.

In the secondary stage of syphilis infection, typically 2 to 10 weeks after the sore or ulcer appears, the patient may develop a rash. This rash consists of small, reddish or brown sores in the mouth, vagina or anus. Fever, headaches, muscle aches and swollen glands may also be present at this stage. If treatment is not administered immediately, the symptoms may go away, but may present themselves repeatedly for up to a year. Left untreated, the infection will progress into the next stage.

Not every syphilis patient will encounter the stage where the symptoms seem to disappear, in some cases, for a period of 10 to 30 years from the initial infection. This is known as the latent phase of the syphilis infection. This lack of symptoms does not mean the disease has been cured, but the bacteria is lying dormant in the body. Some of the cases in the latent stages will then progress to the final and most severe stage of the syphilis infection.

In the final stage of syphilis infection, the patient is at risk of organ failure and in some cases, death. The infection also causes complications in the brain, which may also lead to stroke. Other symptoms like numbness to touch, deafness or blindness may manifest. Changes to personality and dementia have also been known to affect patients at this stage.

Gonorrhoea

The most common symptoms for gonorrhoea for the presence of a greenish or yellowish discharge from their genitalia. Burning sensations or pain when passing urine can also be felt.

There are cases where Gonorrhoea can affect the anal/rectal region. In such cases, the patient may experience bowel movements with pain, or even the feeling of having to go again shortly after passing motion. Should such symptoms be identified, it is advised to approach a doctor for an STD test.

Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV):

Commonly known as herpes, it can affect various parts of the body. Most often manifested as sores on the genitals or mouth. The herpes simplex virus is a contagious virus that can spread from person to person through direct contact, like kissing or sexual intercourse. There are 2 types of Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV)

Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1:
Popularly known as oral herpes, is responsible for cold sores at the mouth and face areas. The virus is highly virulent when the infected person is having a outbreak, though this virus may be contracted even from a asymptomatic person. Outbreaks might not happen even if you test positive for Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1.
Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2:
Responsible for genital herpes outbreaks. This virus is contracted through direct contact with a person who has a herpes sore. It has shown that people are more at risk of contracting HSV from a carrier if they engage in sexual contact without use of barrier methods such as condoms.

HIV Tests

Test nameTest Description
HIV PCR RNA

PCR RNA is an extremely effective test to detect HIV viral copies of HIV infections in its earliest stage before the body can produce antibodies.

Detecting an HIV infection in its earliest stage can deliver accurate results from 10 to 12 days afer exposure.

The PCR RNA test can also effectively measure HIV viral load counts for patients living with HIV and for patients who are receiving Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) treatment.

HIV P24 Antigen & Antibody Combo Test (results in

The 4th Generation HIVp24 Antigen/Antibody Combo Test is versatile and can detect both HIV antibodies and HIV antigens (p24). The core of an HIV viral is composed of the HIV p24 antigen, a protein which becomes detectable between 12 to 20 days afer exposure — peaking at around 3 to 4 weeks and dropping to lower levels afer 5 to 6 weeks once the HIV antibodies start developing.

Although the p24 antigen may be detectable by the 1 to 4-day exposure mark, some people will not manifest detectable levels until much later (i.e. up to 28 days afer exposure) .

To receive the most accurate results, we recommend patients come in for this particular HIV screening test only afer the 28-day window. It is important to note that once your body starts producing HIV antibodies, p24 antigen levels will decrease and become undetectable (seroconversion).

Only a small number of people will experience a delayed seroconversion. This is when the p24 antigen levels do not decrease because the associated antibodies are not being produced. However, this 4th Generation Combo test is effective at screening both the p24 antigen and HIV antibodies from the 28-day post-exposure period and beyond.

HIV Antibody-only Test (results in 20 minutes)

This is a 3rd Generation HIV test that only detects HIV antibodies in the blood. HIV antibodies are detectable between 14 to 20 days post-exposure to HIV.

However, this might not be the case for everyone and it may take longer to occur in some individuals compared to others. Based on available statistics, over 99.9% of people who are infected with the HIV virus will have detectable antibodies at the 90-day post-exposure mark.

For the few who experience delayed seroconversion (does not produce detectable antibodies), we will administer the 4th Generation HIV P24 Antigen & Antibody Combo test in order to detect the virus.

Pro-Viral DNA HIV Blood Test

For an accurate HIV diagnosis, we recommend the Pro-Viral DNA HIV Blood test compared to other well-known HIV tests (such as HIV RNA PCR test, HIV Antibody & - Antigen test and HIV Antibody-only test) which may deliver inconclusive results.

The Pro-Viral DNA HIV blood test has its advantages, such as:

  • It has a lower false-positive rate
  • It can be used 10 days post-exposure
  • Effective at diagnosing: HIV in newborn babies born to HIV-positive mothers; testing a person with seronegative HIV infections (no anti-HIV antibodies produced); and diagnosing patients with HIV who maintains an undetectable viral load without the help of medication.
Rapid HIV Testing

Today, most HIV testing can be done using rapid HIV tests, eliminating a lengthy waiting period that can be stressful for some patients. The test is performed by Dr. Ben - and you will receive your results within minutes.

If you suspect that you and/or your partner have been infected with HIV and want to know your HIV status, feel free to make an appointment at our clinic.

Precautions
